What Is Weqaya?

It is a screening program to identify cardiovascular risk factors.


Why is it important?

  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number 1 cause of death in the UAE.
  • The UAE has the world’s second highest rate of Diabetes, and very high rates of other risk factors for circulatory disease such as heart attack and stroke
  • .In many cases, people are unaware they have risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
  • Early Detection of these risk factors can prevent heart attack and stroke.


Who should have Weqaya Screening?

  • UAE Nationals living in Abu Dhabi who are above 18 years and up to 75 years need to have “Weqaya” screening to qualify for the “Thiqa “ card.
  • In exceptional cases, the requirement for the Weqaya health check may be waived.

What Should you do to get Weqaya Screening?

  • Obtain the screening certificate by visiting a Daman center and take it to any of the health care clinics listed at the end of this document.
  • At the clinic they will:
    • Measure Blood Pressure
    • Measure Height
    • Measure Weight
    • Withdraw Blood for blood tests to determine sugar and cholesterol blood level.
  • The Screening certificate will be stamped. You will need to take this back to Daman to be enrolled for the Thiqa card.
  • If your health check shows abnormal results you will be offered an appointment with a doctor for further investigation.
  • In case the destination centers were found full of large numbers of applicants, applicants may be guided to other clinics and centers. 

What do you need to take with you? 

  • Original and one copy of all pages of the family book     – for each family
  • Original and one copy of passport      – for each person
  • One passport photo showing the full face     – for each person
  • Copies of both sides of identity card , if available    – for each person
  • Copy of stamped Weqaya Screening Certificate (for Thiqa enrollment) – for each eligible persons 
What Are the advantages of having the Thiqa card? 
  • The holders of Thiqa card are entitled for free access to all private and public health care facilities within the Thiqa network. 
  • Registration and affiliation to “Thiqa” program does not require payment of any fees and is open to all ages.
