Signs and symptoms:
Symptoms are like seasonal flu and include the following:
- Fever
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Body aches
- Headaches
- Chills and fatigue
- Sometimes, diarrhea and vomiting
Disease transmission:
Pig to human: through direct contact with an infected pigs
Human to human: through close contact (within 2 meter) with sick person. The virus spread through sneezing, and coughing or touching contaminated hands.
Length of contagious:
People with swine influenza virus infection start to be contagious one day prior to the symptoms and for 7 days after the onset of the symptoms. That means that an infected person may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before s/he feels sick, as well as during sickness.
Infected people should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possible for up to 7 days following illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might be contagious for longer periods
