04 June 2017

Abu Dhabi – June 04, 2017: Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) in collaboration with the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD) and Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has organized a workshop aimed to introduce food producers to healthy pre-packaged foods standards and train them to prepare their products in a healthy way to meet the standards. These standards include products that are low in fat and salt content and high in fiber among other specifications. The workshop saw the participation of 27 entities from the food industry.

Sultan Saeed Al Mehairi Director of information services and engagement department at Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), said: “This workshop articulates QCC’s priority to protect the consumer health by introducing our partners from food industry to the requirements and standards for healthy pre-packaged food products and highlighting the requirements for obtaining the Trustmark issued by the council. Products that meet our criteria for food quality and safety can carry the Trustmark in product promotion, boosting consumer confidence in their products and contributing to our shared goals of creating a safer and fairer market in Abu Dhabi.”

Al Mehairi added: “The workshop is part of a series of measures and programs undertaken by QCC to enable its partners from commercial and retail sectors to ensure the high quality of products traded in Abu Dhabi markets. This will eventually support the strategic objectives of Abu Dhabi Plan to build a competitive economy that thrives on manufacturing and trading products that meet the highest quality standards.”

Al Mehairi also applauded the efforts of HAAD and ADFCA to enhance public health in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Omniyat Al Hajeri, Director of Public Health Division said; “This workshop comes as a part of our intensified efforts to increase availability of healthy food options in the Emirate by working closely with food producers to ensure the implementation and adoption of healthy food standards. We hope that this meeting will reflect positively in helping food producers and encouraging them to provide more healthy options that carry the dual logos of Weqaya and the QCC Trustmark.”

Al Hajeri added, “We at HAAD believe that 'prevention is better than cure'. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle by making better food choices and engaging in regular exercise is a fundamental pillar of disease prevention. Healthy eating will help contribute to the effective reduction of risk factors associated with major non-communicable diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and other diseases.”

HAAD launched the Weqaya Nutrition Program in collaboration Abu Dhabi Food Control (ADFCA) in September 2013 to raise awareness about healthy food items available at food outlets in the Emirate, while encouraging the outlets to increase their healthy offerings. HAAD collaborated with the Quality Conformity Council (QCC) in December 2016 to introduce Abu Dhabi Certification Scheme for healthy Pre-packaged products. The healthy products that meet the requirements of the scheme will carry the Weqaya/ AD Trustmark logo.
