Led by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, 13 Government Entities Gather to Reverse Obesity Reality in the Emirate

Abu Dhabi – June 24, 2018: When one in three kids or adolescents is overweight or obese in the UAE, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi gathers with 13 governmental entities at the Obesity Creative Lab organized by DoH in partnership with Yas Conference Centre and VPS Healthcare, the health sponsor of this event and Yas Conference Centre, to reverse obesity reality in the Emirate and to ensure healthier lives for the next generation 

The obesity creative lab aimed at drawing a road map to tackle obesity through clearly defined projects assigned for each attended entity including Ministry of Education, Department of Education and Knowledge, Department of Transport - Abu Dhabi, Department of Economic Development, Department of Community Development, Abu Dhabi Health Services, Co. – SEHA, National Health Insurance Company – Daman, Abu Dhabi Media, Family Development Foundation, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council and Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care, in addition to some of the healthcare representatives in the private sector

In this regard, H.E Sheikh Abdulla Al Hamed, Chairman of Department of Health said: “We at the Department of Health Abu Dhabi are aware that health is the community’s most precious wealth and the fuel of life that allows them to contribute to the UAE’s sustainable development goals. Thus we intensity our efforts to create a healthy generation whose empowered to develop lifelong healthy habits of eating healthy and engaging in regular physical activities towards achieving our vision “for a healthier Abu Dhabi”. Today, we take a step closer together in Obesity Creative Lab towards the wellness and health of our community and to ensure that they stay healthy and free from the physical and psychological effects caused by obesity.”

The Obesity Creative Lab will be hosting a series of workshops and two main sessions in which the first session will gather members 13 government entities to come up with ideas and develop plans and initiatives to tackle obesity in 6 months timeframe where the second session will gather excellence’s and heads of government entities to view the proposed initiatives and plans.

Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and Managing Director of VPS healthcare, said: 'Given the high prevalence of obesity in the UAE, it is pivotal for public and private sector to collaborate more and raise awareness about this condition. We need to come up with creative initiatives to ensure the UAE population is made aware about the benefits of practicing and adopting healthy living habits. The challenges associated with obesity are enormous and a major chunk of healthcare spending in the UAE goes towards tackling lifestyle diseases."

"As part of the community, it is our responsibility to tackle obesity. We believe the Obesity Creative Lab is a great platform to gather inputs from public and private sector to tackle childhood obesity and make a positive change in the lives of our children", Dr. Shamsheer added.

H.E Mohamed Hamad Al Hameli, Undersecretary of Department of Health Abu Dhabi added: “The Obesity Creative Lab demonstrates a major step towards real, tangible results in the fight against obesity in Abu Dhabi and its outcomes link directly to the strategic health objectives of Abu Dhabi Government. Here at the Obesity Creative Lab we work together to create the change we want to see in healthier community and setting Abu Dhabi as a good example for other counties to follow when it comes to combating obesity.”

On the sidelines of Obesity Creative Lab, H.E. Sheikh Abdulla Al Hamed will lead the DOH’s Public Health team in different creative activities joined with heads of government departments and their staff.
